Desert and camping · Mangystau

Three days in Mangystau

A 4×4 loop out of Aktau through the chalk country of western Kazakhstan, with two nights in a tent camp. You start and finish in Aktau, so it works on its own or added to a trip in Almaty.

Length
3 days, 2 nights
Effort
Easy walks, long off-road drives
Best months
April to June, September to October

Why it made the cut

Most Mangystau day trips drive 300 km to Bozjyra, take photos at noon and drive back. Camping changes that. You’re at the cliffs in the evening and again at sunrise, which is when they look best.

The route is the core of a five-day trip we ran in September, cut down to the three days in the field. Hotel nights in Aktau before and after are up to you.

There’s no town near Bozjyra, so the camp is simple: tents, sleeping gear and meals cooked on site.

How the days feel

  1. Day 1

Sherkala, Torysh and Ayrakty. Pick-up in Aktau in the morning. Sherkala, a lone mesa shaped like a yurt, then the round stone concretions in the Torysh valley and the castle-like cliffs of Ayrakty, which Taras Shevchenko drew in the 1850s. Night in camp.

  2. Day 2

Kyzylkup and Bozjyra. The striped red and white slopes of Kyzylkup, then south to Bozjyra: the two white “fangs”, the viewpoints along the rim and a walk down to the base. Sunset at the camp on the plateau.

  3. Day 3

Sunrise and the salt flat. Bozjyra at first light, then the white cliffs and salt pan of Tuzbair. Back to Aktau through Zhanaozen, arriving in the early evening.
