Altyn-Emel: Singing Dune, Aktau, Katutau
An early start from Almaty, around 06:00, and a long drive east to Altyn-Emel National Park, 4600 km² of desert steppe with herds of kulans and goitered gazelles. The space here is so open that the scale is felt physically. In the morning, climb the Singing Dune: in dry weather the sand hums as it slides down the slope. Around midday, visit the chalk mountains of Aktau, bands of pink, green, and blue rock from the Paleocene era, 66–56 million years old, the colorful remains of an ancient sea. Then stop at the colored mountains of Katutau, volcanic rocks that the wind has carved into sculpted shapes. In the late afternoon, on the way out of the park, make a short stop at the 700-year-old willow in Basshi village, a living tree whose trunk remembers the era of the Golden Horde. Return to Almaty late in the evening, after a long day of about 15 hours, much of it on the road.
