Altyn Emel National Park

Embark on an unforgettable day-long expedition to Altyn Emel National Park, one of Kazakhstan's largest and most spectacular protected areas. Spanning over 4,600 square kilometres in the Ili River valley, this park is a geological wonderland where ancient landscapes meet dramatic desert formations.

Singing Dune

Your first stop is the legendary Singing Barchan — a massive crescent-shaped sand dune rising 150 metres above the desert floor. On dry, windy days, the shifting sands produce an eerie humming sound that can be heard for kilometres. Climb to the top for breathtaking panoramic views of the Ili River valley and the snow-capped peaks of the Tien Shan mountains in the distance.

Aktau Mountains

Next, journey to the surreal Aktau (White Mountains), a UNESCO-worthy landscape of layered sedimentary rock painted in vivid bands of red, white, orange, and green. These chalk formations have been sculpted by wind and water over 30 million years, creating an otherworldly terrain that resembles the surface of Mars. Palaeontologists have discovered fossils of ancient rhinoceroses, crocodiles, and turtles in these layers.

Katutau Mountains

The final highlight is Katutau (Frozen Lava), a collection of volcanic rock formations shaped into fantastical pillars, arches, and towers by millions of years of erosion. The dark volcanic stone contrasts dramatically with the lighter sedimentary rocks of nearby Aktau, creating a photographer's paradise.

What to expect

This is a full-day tour covering approximately 500 km round-trip from Almaty. Travel is by comfortable 4x4 vehicle with an experienced English-speaking guide. The route passes through stunning steppe landscapes along the Ili River. A picnic lunch is included at a scenic spot within the park. The terrain at each stop involves moderate walking on uneven ground (15–30 minutes per site).
