FAQ

A two-day tour of the Almaty region: Charyn, Kolsai and Kaindy, Altyn-Emel. Included: transport and guide, eco-fees, accommodation in guesthouses.

Departure to Altyn-Emel National Park, one of the most underrated natural reserves in Central Asia. Key points on the route: Singing Dune, a 150-meter dune that “sings” on the way down, Charyn Canyon, 154 kilometers of red sandstone famous for its “Valley of Castles” with serrated towers, and the first Kolsai Lake at 1818 meters, a turquoise mirror surrounded by centuries-old fir trees. Transport, a professional guide and all required fees are included, all that remains is to choose a date. The program works equally well for a first visit or a return trip. The best time is from May to October, when the roads are open and the landscapes are at their finest. Small groups and private format available on request.

Highlights

  • Singing Dune — a 150 m dune that hums on the way down
  • Charyn Canyon — 154 km of red sandstone, the "Valley of Castles" with jagged cliffs
  • Kolsai Lake 1 — an alpine lake at 1818 m in Ili-Alatau National Park
  • In desert regions, we recommend May-June and September-October
  • All transfers are by comfortable air-conditioned transport with an experienced driver
  • A professional guide with experience in the region — a non-template narrative
  • Photo stops and scenic viewpoints are built into the schedule
  • Private format — only your group, with no other tourists joining

Worth taking

  • Identity card or passport
  • Comfortable shoes for walks and light trekking
  • Sunscreen (SPF 30+), sunglasses and a hat
  • A warm jacket or fleece — it is cool in the mountains even in summer
  • A light raincoat or membrane jacket in case of mountain rain
  • A water bottle (refill in villages and hotels) and a light snack for the road
  • Cash (cards are not accepted everywhere, especially in villages and national parks)
  • Power bank and a camera or phone for photos
  • A scarf or face buff — for dust and sandy winds in the desert
  • Personal hygiene items — guesthouses have a basic set, but not always your own shampoo and shower gel
  • Mosquito and midge repellent — especially near water and in forests
  • Clothing by season: in summer — light and breathable, in autumn and spring — layers, in winter — a down jacket and warm boots

Itinerary

Altyn-Emel: Singing Dune, Aktau, Katutau

Exploring Altyn-Emel National Park, 4600 km² of desert landscapes with herds of kulans and goitered gazelles. The scale is felt physically, like in Arizona. In the first half of the day, climb Singing Dune, a 150-meter dune 1.5 kilometers long. On the descent, the dry sand hums with a deep sound, like the engine of a warming-up car, and the sound really comes from under your feet. Closer to lunch, stop at the Aktau chalk mountains, pink, green and blue bands of Paleocene rock. A colorful echo of an ancient sea that disappeared 50 million years ago. In the second half of the day, stop at the Katutau colored mountains, volcanic rocks weathered by wind into sculptural forms. Here, geology seems to have decided to work by hand. Return to Almaty by evening.

Canyons and Kolsai, Kaindy Lakes

Descend into Charyn Canyon and walk through the “Valley of Castles”, 154 kilometers of red sandstone where the midday sun turns the cliffs copper. The trail runs between serrated towers along the river, with the feeling that you have stepped onto the set of a Western. In the first half of the day, take in Moon Canyon, Charyn’s neighboring valley with gray and bluish rock formations. An otherworldly landscape where it is easy to lose track of time and your phone. Closer to lunch, visit Black Canyon with its volcanic walls and narrow passages, a dark counterpoint after the red of Charyn. In the second half of the day, walk around the first Kolsai Lake (1818 m), a turquoise expanse surrounded by centuries-old Tien Shan fir trees. The ringing silence of the mountains, the rare cry of a falcon and trout that bite right from the shore. After lunch, transfer to Saty village, a mountain aul in the Ile-Alatau National Park, the starting base for Kolsai and Kaindy. Guesthouses serve homemade beshbarmak, manti and herbal tea. By evening, visit Kaindy Lake, formed after the 1911 earthquake. Spruce trunks rise from the water like the masts of a sunken fleet, and the turquoise surface between them is a place out of time, one of the most recognizable images of Kazakhstan.
