4.0 2 reviews13 hoursPrivate tourModerateStandard comfortby Treeple

One-day tour from Almaty to Charyn, Moon and Black Canyons, with a walk through the Valley of Castles. Transport, guide and eco fees included.

A trip to Charyn Canyon is worth the long day: red cliffs, the Valley of Castles, and views that are hard to forget. Three stops make up the route: Charyn Canyon, which stretches for 154 km and is best known for its Valley of Castles, a 2–3 km walk among jagged red sandstone towers; Moon Canyon with its gray, lunar-looking rock formations; and Black Canyon with volcanic walls and narrow passages. The canyons lie more than 200 km from Almaty, so the day starts early and ends late. Transport, a guide and all fees are included, and the pace of the walks is set by the group. A private format is available on request, and the program suits both first-time visitors and those coming back for more.

Itinerary

Charyn Canyon
Day 1

Three canyons: Charyn, Moon, Black

An early start from Almaty (around 06:00–07:00) and a drive of about three and a half hours bring the group to Charyn Canyon. A path descends to the river and runs through the “Valley of Castles”, a 2–3 km section of the 154 km canyon where red sandstone towers rise on both sides and the midday sun turns the cliffs to copper. After the walk, the road continues to Moon Canyon, a neighboring valley with gray and bluish rock formations whose bare, folded slopes look more like a lunar surface than a place on Earth. Around lunchtime, visit Black Canyon with its volcanic walls and narrow passages, a dark, contrasting palette after the red of Charyn. Then the road leads back to Almaty, where the group arrives late in the evening. It is a long day of about 13–14 hours, much of it on the road.
